I have to confess I have been working very hard to kick my addiction to magazines because we need to save money, but every time I get close to the rack of magazines at the grocery store checkout counter I feel the urge to buy just one more.
I’m not exactly sure when this addiction began, but over the years I know I have purchased hundreds of magazines without even thinking about how much money I was spending on them.
When I am at the checkout counter my eyes automatically begin scanning all of the magazine covers while I wait in line.
Which magazine has a new diet with a pitch that reads something like “lose 10 pounds in 2 days”? Which one says “tips on how to turn your life around in a week”?
There are several magazines that I use to buy quite frequently. One of them is Woman’s World. It is a weekly magazine that always has a diet story in it, along with easy recipes. And I always have to read their weekly romantic fiction story. It is much quicker and easier to read 2 pages of a story than it is to read an entire book.
Another magazine that I enjoy is First For Women. It’s a monthly or bi-monthly magazine that again is full of all kinds of tips and stories for women.
And then of course there is Good Housekeeping magazine. For years I bought this one every month until I finally noticed that they publish an online version.
I have copies stored all over the house. In spare closets, in cupboards with other recipe books, and even in the drawers of my coffee table.
I cannot even begin to estimate how much I have spent on magazines over the years. I noticed that I bought less and less magazines throughout 2011. I think the last one I bought was in November.
But the attraction to buy them is always there and that is why I need to kick my addiction to magazines once and for all. I want to save money. I need to save money. This is one of the many things that I can stop buying. If I want to read a magazine I can always read the ones that are available online. I do not need to add more copies to my collection.
