Summer Spending, and a Summer Lovin $480 Cash Giveaway

summer lovin giveaway

Hello July 1st, and Happy Canada Day to everyone in Canada today.

This is really the first day of summer for most in Canada as the kiddies just got out of school last week and the temperatures are skyrocketing across Canada. For many people this is the first long weekend to hit the camp sites or do some sort of long weekend getaway.

While my husband and I continue to tackle our debt situation we don’t usually find ourselves spending much extra money during the summer months.

But when we first purchased our last new house 7 years ago each summer was filled with working outside, which meant spending a lot of money on landscaping, gardens, and the fence.

We had a massive backyard. The size of a baseball diamond in fact.

The first summer we were there we got all the neighbours together to build a nice wooden fence.

Our backyard touched 6 other backyards so coordinating everyone to work on it and everyone’s payments to buy the products was a lot of work. And if you have ever worked with your neighbours to build a fence you know that at first they may be excited but then life gets in the way and people disappear when it is time to work.

I don’t remember the exact amounts but I think our share came to $4,000 or $5,000. And then my husband built two wooden gates for us as well.

Each summer after that we found ourselves spending more money on the outside of our home. We added a number of nice trees, lilac bushes, and a nice small fountain.

No matter how you look at it, homeownership is expensive. Either you purchase a brand new home and finish things outside that were not included in the build, or you purchase an older home and renovate it to meet your needs. Either way, it can add up quickly.

So this summer we are saving money by not having to do any of that, and it actually feels wonderful.

Do you need some extra spending money for the summer? I hope you enter today’s giveaway, and that you have a wonderful summer with your family and friends.

Thanks again, to the wonderful group of bloggers that came together to make this giveaway happen.

Thanks for organizing this giveaway with me! I used a similar example, as I have spent a decent amount of money on outdoor stuff since buying a house.

Thanks for inviting me. It was a lot of fun.
It is easy to spend a lot on stuff for the house. Lucky you won the lawnmower though to help cover your costs.

SO happy for you guys that you are avoiding the expense of home repairs/improvements this summer! We are likely staining the barn (to help the wood last longer) and repairing a retaining wall with our summer money. Fun stuff! :-)

Not paying for home improvements is one of the great advantages of renting. We love it!

I remember the days of spending money during the summer time on our yard. It can get so expensive if you are not careful. I appreciate being included in this giveaway!

Yes, it can definitely get expensive, especially if the area is brand new without any trees or other greenery.

Thanks for inviting me to be a part of this giveaway Sicorra!

I wish I had a big yard like that for my dogs. They'd love all that free space to run around in.

I bet it feels good not having to spend money this summer :) I have some projects to outside myself but I'm shopping around for the best deal.

Your yard sounds beautiful they way you described it with the landscaping and fountain :)

Happy Canada day to you my friend! Have an awesome July!

Thanks Corina! It's been a warm summer day here today.

I'm sure your dogs would love a big yard like that. Where we are now we have a smaller yard but we still back on to 2 huge yards and both of those neighbors have dogs that do laps around the yards every day.

        Have a wonderful July :-)

I don't know how you guys are able to avoid home repairs. I seem to have them to do every year, and that's just the house, don't get me started on the yard! Either way, congrats on not spending the money on the house or outside in the yard. That takes some willpower. Maybe just a new sprinkler since it's so hot. :)

hmmm....sorry, I neglected to mention that the house we are in now is a rental home. The house I wrote about the huge yard is a house we sold in 2009. Hence no more yard maintenance or house maintenance to pay for.

But I do know what you mean. It is so easy to spend money on repairs and upgrades in or outside your home. It is the price of home ownership as they say, and sometimes it is fun, and sometimes not so much, right?

Funny you should mention home ownership ... we're saving up for a down payment ourselves! This would be a lovely drop in that savings bucket. This summer we've had a lot of scheduled travel so we're biting the bullet on those expenses and then buckling down for the savings haul.

Saving up for a downpayment is a lot of work. Good luck! Enjoy your summer travels.

Thanks for including me in the giveaway, Sicorra. Happy to be a part of it. The good (or bad depending on your viewpoint) is we have very little yard living in LA. We are doing some redecorating inside (went from one room to far too many rooms!) but we have updated in awhile so it's needed and I'm excited about it.

But instead of having a big yard you have beaches. So much nicer!! Maintenance free, free access, and loads of fun. :-)

I know exactly what you mean about how renovating one space easily leads to more and more. Hope it turns out well.
